The history of 1st cup®
-
1st Cup® has always taken place at Coffee Exchange on January 1st. Every New Year’s Day, Coffee Exchange opens for business and contributes 100% of its first day’s business to support The Coffee Trust®, a non-profit that supports coffee farmers and their families in Guatemala. Over most of the last 15 years, Coffee Exchange has contributed anywhere between $7,500 and $10,000 during 1st Cup®.
Every morning on January 1st, Providence wakes up, at first bleary-eyed, but suddenly acutely aware that it is 1st Cup®! Jumping out of bed… ok, stumbling out of bed, Providence makes its way to Wickenden Street for a spirited scene. The energy in Coffee Exchange is palpable. There are visitors from out of town, old friends to see, prizes to win, a silent auction to peruse, great coffee to start the new year, and a sense of excitement that sets the tone for the entire year.
Since Coffee Exchange started 1st Cup®, others have joined in! In Albuquerque, New Mexico at Trifecta Coffee Company, the same excitement is happening every New Year’s Day. Java Joe’s in Santa Fe joins in on New Year’s Day from time to time. But, when unable to do so, Java Joe’s writes a generous check to The Coffee Trust® in support of Guatemala coffee farmers and their families. New participants join each year, and every participating café or coffee business creates its own 1st Cup® experience. The common thread is the excitement and the glow on the faces of the patrons, knowing that it’s all on behalf of coffee farmers in Guatemala.
